A letter to the high school teachers who went out of their way for me, and for so many others

To the English teachers, math teacher, music teachers and all the others who kept me sane,

Thank you. I know I’ve said it before. But it’s been a couple of years now and I’m still feeling that I haven’t provided sufficient thanks.

Thank you for listening, for treating my problems like they mattered.

Thank you for not letting me feel too sorry for myself.

Thank you for understanding that sometimes I just needed to cry.

Thank you for giving me the truth when I didn’t want to admit it.

Thank you for teaching me to find the truth myself.

Thank you for trusting me.

Thank you for letting me know that I always had somewhere to go.

Thank you for reminding me of how lucky I am.

Thank you for helping me with homework even when I should have asked much earlier.

Thank you for staying late to explain a problem I just couldn’t figure out on my own.

Thank you for being more patient than I deserved when I struggled to stay awake in class, and for explaining what I had missed.

Thank you for listening to me talk about the same internal struggle over and over.

Thank you for making it clear when I wasn’t cutting it.

Thank you for giving me grace when I messed up.

Thank you for making me love to learn.

Thank you for never comparing me to anyone else.

Thank you for treating me like an entire human. Not only a student, athlete, actor, or annoying kid (though I’m sure I was).

I’m still so young, still learning so much, and I certainly don’t plan to stop anytime soon. Except to say, as I finish up my second year of college, thank you.
